In 2019, the CIVIX application emerged as a non-partisan, citizen-driven initiative designed to re-engage young people with politics. The project was led by a team of passionate volunteers, mainly students from various universities, and its core mission was to bridge the gap between youth and political engagement in Belgium, a country where young voters were showing increasing signs of political disengagement. According to The Economist, Belgium ranked last in political participation among European nations, and the CIVIX project aimed to address this pressing issue.
With an abstention rate of 15% in Brussels and 36% of young Belgians stating they would be indifferent to the lack of voting rights (according to the Generation What survey), CIVIX sought to address these concerning statistics.
The application, "Give Meaning to Your Voice," was developed to provide comprehensive educational content on Belgium’s political system, as well as insights into the political landscape in the run-up to the May 2019 federal, regional, and European elections. The app was launched in March 2019 and was available for free on both iOS and Android platforms.
By offering this tool, CIVIX sought to encourage informed political participation, allowing users to compare different political programs and make more informed voting decisions. The app also aimed to combat the growing political apathy among young Belgians by giving them the tools to understand and engage with the electoral process in a meaningful way.
The project received significant support from various organizations, including financial backing from the Brussels French-speaking Parliament, the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, and Phoenix Capital, as well as partnerships with RTBF, the European Parliament, the Brussels Parliament, UCL Louvain, and ULB. Additionally, it benefited from the sponsorship of V Comm and collaboration with Young Talks and the Conseil de la Jeunesse.
